Roofing Questions from Knowle Homeowners

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most often across Knowle and south Bristol.

Do you cover my part of Knowle?

We cover Knowle and the surrounding areas, including Totterdown, Windmill Hill, Brislington, Arnos Vale, St Anne’s, Knowle West, Filwood, Inns Court, Hengrove, Whitchurch, Stockwood and Bedminster. If you are just outside that, ring and ask.

How quickly can you come out to a leak?

We aim to be with you the same day for leaks and storm damage where we can. In a widespread storm we prioritise water coming in and anything dangerous.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. The survey and written quote are free, with no obligation to go ahead.

Why does my roof leak only in certain weather?

Often because the wind drives rain into a weak spot that stays dry in calm rain. In this part of the country the Met Office notes the strongest winds nearly always come from between south and north-west, so slopes and chimneys facing that way are the first place we look.

Is Knowle in a conservation area?

Knowle itself is not covered by a conservation area, according to Bristol City Council’s list. Nearby Arnos Vale and Brislington each have one. If your house is listed or in a conservation area, check with the council before changing roofing materials.

Do I need planning permission for a new roof?

A like-for-like re-roof on an ordinary house does not usually need planning permission. Listed buildings, conservation area properties and changes to the shape of the roof can be different. We can point you to the right place to check.

My house is an old council house. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Much of Knowle Park and Knowle West was built by the council between the wars, and those houses are ordinary brick-built homes with conventional pitched roofs. We check what covering is on yours now and what the structure was designed for before recommending anything.

Should I repair or replace my roof?

If the problem is local, such as one flashing or a few slipped tiles, a repair is usually right. If repairs keep recurring, the underlay has failed or the tiles are breaking down, replacement can be better value. We will explain which and why.

What guarantee do you give?

A 20 year written guarantee covering workmanship and the materials we supply. See our guarantee page.

How long have you been trading?

Twenty years.

Do you do flat roofs?

Yes, including EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass on extensions, garages, dormers and bays. See flat roofs.

Can you help with an insurance claim?

We can provide photos and a written description of storm damage and the work needed for your insurer.

How much will my roof cost?

It depends on access, size, covering, chimneys and what is found underneath. Our cost guide explains what moves the price, and we give free written quotes.
