Roofer in Hengrove and Whitchurch
South of Knowle, on the edge of the city. Streets that grew up around a 1930s airfield, mid-century estates and the newer homes of Hengrove Park. Roof repairs, flat roofs and re-roofing.
Roofing in Hengrove and Whitchurch
This corner of south Bristol has a history most roofs do not: Bristol’s Whitchurch Airport was operating here by 1930, and aerial photographs from that year show the airfield at Hengrove. The old airfield site now holds South Bristol Community Hospital and leisure facilities, and Hengrove Park has been described as the largest urban regeneration site in Bristol.
Around it, Hengrove is mostly terraced housing. Further east, Stockwood was developed in two parts: the lower estate is earlier council housing on steep valley sides, and the upper estate was built as private housing in the 1960s. Bristol Ideas lists Stockwood among the city’s post-war estates.
That mix means a wide spread of roof types within a short drive: post-war and mid-century pitched roofs, plenty of flat-roofed garages and extensions, and brand-new homes that will not need us for years.
Typical roofing jobs around Hengrove and Whitchurch
Flat-roofed garages and extensions
Where a house has a flat-roofed garage or extension, old single-layer felt is often what is letting the water in. See flat roofs and EPDM.
Ridges and verges on open ground
Streets on the edge of the city, near large open spaces, can catch the wind more than tight inner terraces. Mortar-bedded ridges and verges are the first to show it.
Earlier re-roofs
A post-war roof may already have been re-covered once. We check what is on the roof now, how it was fixed, and whether the timbers suit it before recommending repair or replacement.
Steep plots in Stockwood
On the valley-side streets, access to the back of a roof can be awkward. We plan scaffolding and materials around the slope.
Before you book
Most roofing work in Hengrove, Whitchurch and Stockwood is ordinary repair and replacement on houses outside any conservation area, so planning is rarely an issue for like-for-like work. Changes to the shape of a roof, such as a dormer, are different and may need permission or Building Regulations approval.
If you live in one of the newer homes at Hengrove Park and spot a roof problem, check first whether it is still covered by the builder’s warranty.
